Tokyo in September – meeting up?

By gamessig

DiGRA 2007? [long story edit edit...] the point is that I’m not going. Some of you lucky folk are, however. Commiserations to those who are not. Congratulations to those who are!
Should people arrange to meet up while they’re there?

Note added in September:
Grethe (see comment dtd 7th September) has suggested a meeting time and place…

  1. Julian Says:

I still don’t know whether I’ll be presenting a paper, but I somehow convinced my higher-ups to buy me a ticket, so I am definitely going. And I am definitely interested in meeting up with people, before, during, and after the conference.

  2. David Surman Says:

Though I wont be giving a paper there, I would still like to attend, so long as the university is nice enough to give me funding. If I get to go, having a chat with other nice film and games people in some cherry blossom filled park eating sushi would be FAB!

  3. Grethe Mitchell Says:

It’d be great to meet up with people. How shall we arrange this?

  4. diane Says:

    Hi Grethe!
Ummmm….I could post something to the gamesnetwork list…asking people to leave a message here if they want to meet up…
    Other suggestions anyone?

  5. michael Says:

I will also be there. I see three options: a bar/ restaurant, a place in the university, or at one of our hotels.
I could shoot the organizers an email to see whether we can get a room after the official program is over.

  6. Lori Shyba Says:

Great. Right up my alley — games and film, that is. Keep me posted re time and place.

    Hi Everyone,

Could we, in the first instance, meet for an informal drink and get to know each other? I am staying at the Forest Hongo Hotel (close to the Uni) for the conference so I guess we could use the bar/lobby there to meet on one of the evenings and then move on to a restaurant etc for a meal.

I’ll jump in and make a suggestion for Wednesday 26th September 19.00 at the Forest Hongo Hotel, moving on to a restaurant at 20.30. How is that? Here’s a link to a map on how to find the Forest Hongo hotel from the Uni http://www.qci.jst.go.jp/eqis/hybrid.pdf

If there is sufficient interest we could then set up a more formal meeting with possibly a discussion agenda? However I will be on the excursion on the 29th (day after the conference) and flying back the 30th so it might be difficult to meet after the conference is over (if that is what Michael meant?).

  8. Hanna Sommerseth Says:

    Hi everyone,

I’ll be there, and would be interested in getting involved with the games/film sig. Wednesday 19.00 at the Forest Hongo would be fine, but I’m also not able to meet up after the conference, as I’m flying back on the 29th.

  9. William Huber Says:

I’m interested in an informal meeting at least. My timetable is much like Grethe’s.

An off-hand suggestion: one of my favorite Tokyo hang-outs is a cafe in Shibuya called the Cafe Apres-Midi (http://www.apres-midi.biz/ – an English-language write up is here – http://tokyofoodie.wordpress.com/tag/not-sure-just-feeling-like-a/music/). Perhaps we can delve into the schedule and find a free block of time.

  10. Barry Atkins Says:

I’ll be there for any meeting of the Sig — drinks followed by food sounds good, as ever.

  11. Matteo Bittanti Says:

Hi everybody! It seems like I won’t be able to make it this year. I hope you’ll write a report or something on a blog – I really regret missing this meeting :-(

The good news is that our collective book on film game convergence/divergence is now finished and it will be released in early 2008. Per aspera ad astra.

    Ciao!

  12. Patrick Crogan Says:

    Hi
I’ll try to come along to a meeting so please let me know and I’ll keep my ears open :-)

    Hi

I will also try to be there, sanity, lag and travel permitting :)

To clarify: an informal meeting is planned Wed 26th here: http://tokyofoodie.wordpress.com/category/not-sure-just-feeling-like-a/music/
but that place seems to be a bit difficult to find. Can we meet after the program closes and get there together?

  15. gamessig Says:

oooh, I thought the idea was meet at Forest Hongo Hotel (Grethe’s message) at 7.00, then go out to eat.
Meeting on-site after program closes does sound easy tho’
Anyway, once its decided, if somebody could post it here so others can find out please.
    Have fun in Tokyo everyone.

  16. michael Says:

Right, thanks. Next time I shall read the whole thread before posting (I sill like the Apres Midi Cafe though.

  17. Grethe Mitchell Says:

    Hi all,
Are we still going with the suggestion of meeting at the Forest Hongo or are we meeting somewhere else? I had a quick look at William’s suggestion and the place looks nice, but I have no idea where it is and how to get there. From my pov I would prefer to meet up somewhere near the conference for starters (so that I am sure to find it) and then move on to somewhere to eat or drink – hopefully both! I suggested the Forest Hongo because it is close to the university and has an easy-to-find map. I don’t know what the facilities are there yet (it may be quite basic e.g. business hotel), so the idea was to just have it as an easy meeting point at 7pm and then to move on at 8pm or 8.30pm? However I am totally happy if anyone wants to arrange an alternative meeting place – but could they provide directions etc. Thanks.

  18. diane Says:

    Hello Grethe!

Current state of play is still Wednesday, at 7 at the Forest Hongo…

Update us here if plans change so folks know.

  19. Grethe Mitchell Says:

Hello again, ok 7pm Forest Hongo it is. See you all there!
